Pulmonary Rehab
What Is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a structured, medically supervised program for people with chronic lung disease that limits their breathing and activity. Rather than treating the lungs directly, pulmonary rehab trains the rest of the body — the heart, muscles, and nervous system — to do more with the lung function you have. It is recommended by the American Thoracic Society, the GOLD guidelines for COPD, and Medicare as a core treatment for symptomatic COPD, and it is one of the most effective interventions available for reducing breathlessness and improving quality of life.
A typical course runs 36 sessions over 12 weeks, two to three sessions per week, each lasting about an hour.

Who May Qualify for Pulmonary Rehab?
Pulmonary rehabilitation may be recommended for patients with:
Medicare’s national coverage is specific to COPD and post-COVID symptoms; other diagnoses may be covered by Medicare contractors or commercial plans on a case-by-case basis. A physician referral is required. Not sure where you stand? Review your insurance coverage or contact our team.
Pulmonary Rehab
Pulmonary Rehab and Heart Health
Lung and heart disease frequently travel together — COPD roughly doubles cardiovascular risk, and many patients with heart failure also have reduced lung function. Because Rehab by RescueMD is a cardiac facility, every pulmonary rehab patient benefits from cardiac-grade monitoring, and patients with both conditions can be managed in a coordinated plan with our traditional cardiac rehab team.
Pulmonary Rehab
Physician-Supervised Care
Medicare requires that pulmonary rehabilitation be delivered under the direct supervision of a physician who is immediately available throughout each session. At Rehab by RescueMD that physician is our founder and medical director, Dr. Olubukola Okoro, board-certified in internal medicine, lifestyle medicine, and obesity medicine. She prescribes each patient’s exercise plan, reviews progress and oxygen data, and coordinates with your pulmonologist or cardiologist. Read why physician-supervised rehab matters.

What to know
What to Expect in Our Pulmonary Rehab Program
01
Initial Evaluation
Your program begins with a review of your diagnosis, pulmonary function results, medications, oxygen use, symptoms, and goals, plus a baseline six-minute walk test and oxygen-saturation assessment. From this, our physician and exercise physiologist build an individualized treatment plan.
02
Supervised Exercise Training
The core of pulmonary rehab. Sessions combine aerobic training (treadmill, recumbent bike, walking track) with resistance training for the arms and legs, with continuous oxygen-saturation and heart-rate monitoring. Intensity is progressed week by week as your tolerance improves. Learn how exercise physiologists guide rehabilitation.
03
Breathing Retraining
Pursed-lip and diaphragmatic breathing, pacing strategies, energy conservation, and techniques for managing breathlessness during activity and flare-ups.
04
Education and Self-Management
Small-group classes on understanding your lung condition, inhaler technique, oxygen use, recognizing and acting on exacerbations, airway-clearance techniques, nutrition for lung health, and tobacco cessation.
05
Psychosocial Support
Anxiety and depression are common with chronic breathlessness. Our team screens for both and teaches relaxation-response and stress-management techniques drawn from the same mind-body curriculum used in our intensive cardiac rehab program.
06
Outcomes Assessment
We repeat functional testing and symptom questionnaires during and at the end of the program and report your progress to your referring physician.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Medicare cover pulmonary rehab?
Yes. Medicare covers pulmonary rehabilitation for beneficiaries with moderate to very severe COPD (GOLD II–IV) and for persistent symptoms following COVID-19, with a physician referral. Up to 36 sessions are covered, and up to 36 more may be approved when medically necessary.
How long is pulmonary rehab?
Most programs run 36 sessions over about 12 weeks, two to three sessions per week.
Will I need oxygen during sessions?
If you already use supplemental oxygen, you will use it during exercise. Our team monitors your oxygen saturation continuously and adjusts the plan with your physician as needed.
Is pulmonary rehab the same as cardiac rehab?
They share the same structure — supervised exercise, education, and risk-factor management — but pulmonary rehab is tailored to lung disease, with breathing retraining, oxygen monitoring, and lung-specific education. Patients with both heart and lung conditions can be managed in a coordinated plan.
Do I have to live in Allen?
No. Our in-person program is located in Allen and serves patients from surrounding North Texas communities within roughly 20 miles. Eligible patients elsewhere in Texas can enroll in our virtual pulmonary rehab program.
Who supervises the program?
Dr. Olubukola Okoro, our founder and medical director, is the physician supervisor for pulmonary rehab and is immediately available during every session, as Medicare requires.
