Intensive cardiac rehabilitation is a structured form of cardiac rehab that includes the core components of traditional cardiac rehabilitation while providing a more intensive schedule and a stronger emphasis on comprehensive lifestyle change. Rehab by RescueMD uses the Pritikin Program is a CMS-approved Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation program. Coverage varies by insurance plan.
The program brings together supervised cardiovascular exercise, heart-health education, nutrition guidance, cardiac risk-factor modification and ongoing assessment. The goal is not simply to complete exercise sessions, but to help patients understand and address the behaviors and risk factors that influence long-term cardiovascular health.
Eligibility depends on your diagnosis, clinical status, physician referral and insurance requirements. Common Medicare-covered qualifying conditions for cardiac rehabilitation and ICR include:
A heart attack (acute myocardial infarction) within the preceding 12 months
Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG)
Stable angina
Heart valve repair or replacement
Coronary angioplasty or stent placement (PCI)
Heart or heart-lung transplant
Qualifying stable chronic heart failure
Your exercise plan is individualized to your clinical status, functional capacity and recovery goals. Sessions are supervised and adjusted as you progress, with attention to safe cardiovascular conditioning, endurance and confidence.

Your cardiac rehab plan is individualized and reviewed as you progress. The team tracks your response to exercise, functional improvement and cardiovascular risk factors so that the program can be adjusted appropriately.
Both programs use supervised exercise, education and cardiovascular risk-factor reduction. ICR adds a more intensive educational and lifestyle component and may provide a greater number of covered sessions for eligible patients. The right program depends on your qualifying diagnosis, physician recommendation, clinical needs and coverage.
